Local football clubs are the lifeblood of communities across the country, so fans should be at the heart of decisions impacting them.
I was proud to champion a move for change in the professional game back in 2020, when I joined an illustrious group of individuals – including Gary Neville, David Bernstein (former chair of the FA and Manchester City), and Mervyn King (former Governor of the Bank of England) - which resulted in the launch of ‘Save the Beautiful Game – a manifesto for change’.
Then, in January 2021, I introduced 10 Minute Rule Bill in Parliament calling for an independent regulator.
That’s why I am thrilled with today’s announcement that the Government is introducing legislation to create an Independent Football Regulator, making sure fans are consulted on key decisions that impact club heritage, boosting fan involvement and guaranteeing that fans have a say in the future direction of their club.
