'Coming Here, Being Here' was an exhibition sharing the 'relocation' experiences of some of Maidstone's Nepalese community, held at the Maidstone Museum.
Local MP Helen Grant was welcomed to the exhibition by its hosts, Maidstone Women's Nepalese Society. She said 'Travelling from the Himalayan 'roof of the world' over 4500 miles away, Maidstone's Nepalese Community and their families are opening to us their fascinating stories about moving to a totally different culture, geography and lifestyle. Diversity in our society is a great thing and through photos, traditional dress, artefacts and memorabilia, Nepalese community is once again enriching our lives here in Kent'.
The many exhibits included a collection of bridal jewellery, fondly remembered tickets to Wembley and a collection of photos, each with its own special meaning and story.
The 'Coming Here, Being Here' exhibition was a trailer for a much larger exhibition called 'Do You See What I See?' planned for 14 March to 21 June 2020, it will explore in more detail the experiences of the Nepalese society in Britain.
Alex Gurr, Exhibitions Development Officer, said "We were delighted to be able to host the exhibition 'Coming Here, Being Here' and to work so closely with the Nepalese Women's Society. This exhibition has given us a very small insight into the Nepalese community and we are looking forward to exploring this further with the exhibition 'Do You See What I See' in 2020."
