MP takes fight for barracks to the floor of the House

Closure of Invicta Park Barracks to be debated in Westminster

Maidstone and the Weald MP Helen Grant will be leading a parliamentary debate next week as part of her campaign to save Invicta Park Barracks from closure.

The debate was granted by the House of Commons Backbench Business Committee after Mrs Grant led an application for time to be allocated for a debate on the 'A Better Defence Estate Strategy.' The application was supported by 10 other MPs comprising of 6 Conservative, 3 Labour and 2 SNP members who represent constituencies across the Country from Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey in the far North to Brecon and Radnorshire in the West.

The debate will take place on Tuesday 21st February in the House of Commons and will last 90 minutes. As the lead member, Mrs Grant is likely to have the opportunity to open and close the proceedings. The debate will mark a key milestone in Helen's campaign by providing a public platform for her, and her colleagues, to air, directly to Government, their concerns about the decision to close the barracks

Helen said: 'I am grateful to the Backbench business committee for allocating time for this debate. It will provide a much needed opportunity for MPs to air their views and importantly will require the Minister to respond. I will be making the case that the decision to close Invicta Park Barracks is unfair, particularly on members of the Queen's Gurkha Engineers and their families, for whom Maidstone has become their permanent and settled home. As a result, the Government may be in breach of its own armed forces covenant, which dictates that armed forces personnel and their families must be treated fairly.'
