MP Helen Grant presents special award to Maidstone Mela

Helen Grant presents Veteran volunteer Dennis Edwards with special award at Maidstone Mela

Longstanding Maidstone Mela volunteer of 12 years received a lovely surprise at the 2015 festival of culture at Mote Park last Sunday. Unsung hero Dennis Edwards from Barming was intending to escort local MP Helen Grant around the stalls but before long he found himself centre stage.

Helen presented Dennis with a special award in recognition of the huge amount of work he, and his beloved late wife Sirpa, have undertaken for the local community, particularly through the Mela festival.

Former Minister for Equalities Helen Grant spoke of the gratitude the people of Maidstone had for his efforts over the years and of the richness the cultural diversity of the Mela brings to the community.

Mr Edwards was quite overwhelmed with the presentation, which was especially poignant having recently lost his wife to cancer in the spring of this year.
