MP Backs Campaign for Women and Girls

Maidstone and the Weald MP Helen Grant addressed the South East regional conference of Soroptomist International at the Hilton Hotel in Maidstone on Saturday 10th December.

Soroptomist International is a worldwide organisation which aims to transform the lives and status of women and girls through education and empowerment. They are involved in a broad range of projects to support women in Kent including fund raising for a Women's Refuge, supporting the Fusion Health Living Centre in Parkwood, Maidstone, working with the Alzheimer's Society, and running a writing competition for year 6 pupils to encourage creative writing skills.

The conference was an opportunity for all 14 clubs in the SE Region to come together to share best practice and learn from each other. Mrs Grant spoke to the group about her life and career as a Member of Parliament before taking questions on a broad range of issues. They also discussed how the organisation could diversify and increase its membership in the local area.

Helen said, 'It was a great honour to address the conference. The Soroptomists are a brilliant group of committed, driven and inspiring women who do fantastic work to transform the lives of other women locally here in Maidstone and the Weald and across the world. I wholeheartedly endorse their work in empowering women through education and I look forward to continuing to support them wherever I can.'

Soroptomist International Regional President Carol Infanti said, 'We were delighted to welcome Helen as a speaker at the Soroptimist International South East Regional meeting. My aim for my year as president is entitled, ''connecting women's voices, working together we can make a change' and I'm looking forward to putting this into action.'
