Yalding flood hero Geraldine Brown has won a prestigious national award in Parliament, having been nominated by Maidstone & the Weald MP Helen Grant.
Geraldine was selected as the national winner of the 'Local Heroes Campaign' from a list of 140 nominations from across the country. She has been recognised for her extraordinary effort in leading the fight to implement flood protections for Yalding over more than 16 years.
Launched by the re-insurance organisation Flood Re, the 'Local Heroes' campaign is a nationwide search for individuals and communities that have made a real difference to their local area. Nominations included people who have helped either in preparing for a flood event, or in taking action to help their friends and neighbours during a flood. The awards presentation was held in Parliament this week.
As the national winner, Geraldine has been awarded a £10,000 cheque to go towards Yalding's flood preparedness efforts or a local flood relief charity of her choice.
Helen said 'I am thrilled that Geraldine has won. This award is such deserved recognition of all the time and effort she has given to her community and it was a privilege to be able to nominate her. I remember being with her during the dark days of the Christmas floods 2013 when her fortitude and resilience was inspirational. It is the icing on the cake that the award comes with £10,000, which I know will be put to excellent use in the efforts to continue to protect our community in Yalding.'
Commenting following the receiving of her award in Parliament, Geraldine said, 'I would very much like to thank Helen for spotting the opportunity and for nominating me for this award. I am surprised and totally humbled to have won and the award is a tribute to the strength of the Yalding Community in the face of flood adversity. The £10,000 prize is amazing for Yalding and I can't wait to work with the community to decide how it can be put to most effective use. I am also so pleased that this award will help keep my community in the spotlight whilst we continue to seek better, more robust long-term flood management solutions for the Middle Medway area.'
