Helen warms to cold weather initiatives

The Member of Parliament for Maidstone and the Weald, Helen Grant has renewed her support for vulnerable people this Winter by backing two cold weather initiatives.

Mrs Grant marked National Fuel Poverty Awareness Day by calling on her Maidstone and the Weald constituents to see if they might be able to benefit from either Npower's Health Through Warmth campaign or the You and Your Home referral service, a collaboration between Citizens Advice and UK Power Networks.

Health Through Warmth is an initiative designed to act as a lifeline to the UK's most vulnerable people by offering assistance to those who have long term illnesses and are finding it hard to fully fund heating systems.

The initiative's Rapid Care Fund provides urgent assistance within 21 days for the most vulnerable people who have severe health issues or who have been without heating for a long time. In addition there is also a standard Crisis Fund available to those in need which provides part-funding for necessary measures.

The You and Your Home referral service, run in partnership by UK Power Networks and Citizens Advice, is a collaboration designed to help people in fuel poverty across the country. It has already supported more than 7,000 households in the East, South East and London. As well as providing energy-saving advice, the initiative's experienced advisors can help people to switch supplier to secure a cheaper deal, and apply for grants and benefits that they may be entitled to.

Mrs Grant said: "I am encouraged by these initiatives and I would urge anybody who believes they may be eligible to get involved. It is vital that we look after our most vulnerable members of society and I commend these organisations for taking this positive step and giving something back to the community."
