Helen Grant Visits The Maidstone Mela

Helen Grant MP, the Member of Parliament for Maidstone and the Weald, visited the Maidstone Mela this weekend and met with a number of groups playing key roles in the event.

With the aim of celebrating the cultural diversity of Maidstone, the Maidstone Mela is a festival featuring dancing, music, singing, and food from around the world.

The festival is held at Mote Park, and this year saw performances from Tibetan monks, A Polish literary cabaret, the Maidstone Nepalese Community Group, a Bollywood dance troupe, and an award winning Madness tribute act.

Whilst at the festival, Helen Grant MP met up with a Kent-based group called Cohesion Plus, who had produced the 'Dhol Tamasha' performance.  Featuring 'Four' by Four Bhangra, the performance brings together contemporary urban music with traditional Bhangara.

Speaking at the Maidstone Mela, Helen Grant MP said:

"It is wonderful to be here and to witness the huge variety on show.  It really is spectacular seeing all of the food, music, and dancing from around the world being showcased here in Maidstone.  It is also a wonderful way to celebrate the rich cultural tapestry that is contemporary Maidstone".
